Interactive Video Ads: Types, Feeds, and Fallbacks
Interactive video ads let viewers choose, explore, shop, answer, or control part of the experience. Keep a usable fallback when the device cannot show the extra layer. Count interactions as actions, not as persuasion.
Interactive video ads are a video format that lets viewers choose, explore, shop, answer, or control part of the experience. The interaction can reveal preference or shorten a product decision. It should remain optional, accessible, and useful on the devices where the ad will run. An interaction is an action signal. It is not proof of persuasion or lift.
This page is the video-specific application of interactive advertising. Live streams can carry spoken or on-screen prompts; those belong on livestream advertising.
Interaction types currently documented for YouTube ads
YouTube’s interactive features for video ads page lists these add-ons. Name only the ones you can actually build.
| Interaction | What the viewer does | Official constraint |
|---|---|---|
| Call-to-action button | Leaves for a landing URL | Required when a Merchant Center product feed is attached; Google can apply “Shop now” if you omit one |
| Assets (site links or lead form) | Opens more site paths or submits contact details | Asset support varies by campaign type |
| Auto end screen | Sees a generated end card, for example to install an app | End of the video. Plan a message if the viewer never reaches the end |
| Product feed | Taps a product image under the video | Google Ads: at least four approved products with primary images. Panel currently expands on mobile portrait. Desktop and landscape may not show the same shelf |
| Related videos | Chooses another video from a list while the ad plays | YouTube only |
Google Ads product feeds on video ads also require Shopping ads enabled and Merchant Center linked. You can show all products, specific products, custom-label filters, or no products in an ad group. Demand Gen can attach a feed as a video and products creative. Upload landscape, square, and vertical assets if you want Shorts eligibility.
Interactive features vary by platform, campaign type, placement, and device. The examples above are verified YouTube features. For another platform, confirm the current ad format and eligible placements in its official documentation before planning the interaction.
Device fallbacks and catalog requirements
If the extra layer fails, the ad still has to work.
- Portrait versus landscape. Google currently says the product panel expands when the mobile device is in portrait. Landscape and some desktop surfaces may show video plus CTA only.
- Fewer than four approved products. The shelf may not show. Keep the CTA.
- Lead form unsupported. Fall back to the site form on the landing URL.
- Autoplay without sound. The first frames and on-screen text must carry the offer without the interactive layer.
Place the interaction after the value is clear so a skippable viewer who never taps still saw the brand.
Interaction-to-outcome measurement ladder
Count each rung separately. Do not skip from taps to “the ad worked.”
| Rung | Example event | What it is not |
|---|---|---|
| Impression / play | The video served or started | Attention quality |
| Interaction | Product tap, CTA click, lead-form submit, end-screen click | Persuasion |
| Landing | Session on the destination | A sale |
| Conversion | Purchase or qualified lead you already defined | Incremental lift |
Test whether the interactive version improves the decision versus a simpler video with the same message. A higher tap rate is useful only when qualified conversions and cost also support the decision; different denominators and funnel economics can otherwise make the comparison misleading.
IAB’s 2025 Digital Video Ad Spend and Strategy Report projected digital video would take nearly 60% of US television and video ad spend in 2025 (full report: 58%). Dated market context only. It does not measure interactive formats.
Our view at Anderson Collaborative: Interaction earns its cost when it removes uncertainty. Extra taps that make the ad feel novel but leave the offer no clearer are wasted production.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is an interactive video ad?
An interactive video ad is a video unit that lets the viewer take a named action inside the experience, such as tapping a call to action, opening a product from a feed, or submitting a lead form. Watching the video alone is not the interaction.
What Google interactive video features are documented now?
YouTube Help lists auto end screens, call-to-action buttons, assets such as site links or lead forms, Merchant Center product feeds, and related videos. Product feeds need at least four approved products and currently expand the product panel on mobile portrait.
What happens if the device cannot show the interaction?
Plan a fallback: the video and a standard CTA should still make sense when the product shelf, lead form, or end screen does not render. Do not require the extra layer to understand the offer.
Does a high interaction rate prove the ad persuaded people?
No. An interaction is an action signal. It shows someone tapped, chose, or submitted. It does not prove persuasion or incremental conversions. Read it on a ladder next to landing and conversion events.
