Ad Skipping Rate: Meaning, Metrics, and Measurement

Ad skipping is a viewer using an available skip control. Quartile drop-off can show when viewers stopped watching, but it does not count skip-button clicks. Name the denominator before comparing rates.

Updated September 19, 2026· 7 min read

Ad skipping is a viewer using an available skip control. It is not the same as leaving playback, a TrueView view, a completion, or a paid view. Tracking retention near the skip point helps teams judge the opening of a skippable in-stream unit. Bumper ads and other non-skippable formats have no skip control, so this diagnostic does not apply to them. Audience response can also help assess whether audience targeting put the ad in front of people who had a reason to stay. It does not, by itself, prove return or incrementality. Pair any creative change with conversion tracking if the decision is about outcomes.

Compare skip diagnostics with paid media goals before rewriting the whole video.

Ad skipping timeline from impression through 5-second skip availability, TrueView view, and completion

Separate the events before you name a rate

Google’s video ad formats page says skippable in-stream ads can be skipped after 5 seconds. Bumper and non-skippable in-stream ads cannot be skipped. Shorts ads can be swiped away immediately. The same Help article states that as of October 2025, the metric formerly called Views is now called TrueView views. Billing and how paid views are counted did not change. TrueView views is the current Google Ads column name.

Google’s YouTube ads and view metrics article defines the columns you actually get.

EventWhat it isDocumented Google rule
Skip availabilityWhether a skip control existsSkippable in-stream: after 5 seconds. Bumpers and non-skippable: no skip
Impression / player startDenominator for quartilesIn-stream starts automatically. In-feed starts after a thumbnail click
TrueView viewPaid-view event on CPV. Current Google Ads name for the column formerly called Views30 seconds, or the full ad if shorter, or an interaction, whichever comes first
TrueView view rateTrueView views divided by impressionsFormat-specific columns exist for in-stream, in-feed, and Shorts
Video played to 25/50/75/100%Quartile retentionViewers still watching at that share of the asset, among player starts
Watch timeDuration playedMeasured watch time, with averaging when a small share cannot be measured
CompletionPlayed to 100%The 100% quartile, not the same as a TrueView view on a long ad

Bumper and non-skippable ads do not increment TrueView views in Google Ads. Google also notes it is common to see a steep drop-off after 5 seconds on in-stream ads when the skip button appears. That sentence is the skip-point diagnostic. It is not a skip-rate KPI.

Worked skip-point formula

Hypothetical 20-second skippable in-stream ad. Illustrative numbers, not a benchmark.

Google’s quartile example uses 10 viewers on a 20-second ad. Scale that pattern:

  • Player starts (in-stream impressions): 1,000
  • Still watching at 25% (5 seconds, the skip button): 620
  • TrueView views (full 20 seconds or an interaction): 410
  • Played to 100%: 380

Skip-point retention = 620 / 1,000 = 62%.

Skip-point drop-off = 1 - 0.62 = 38%.

TrueView view rate = 410 / 1,000 = 41%.

Those 38% were no longer watching at the 5-second milestone. Some may have left before the skip control appeared, and the quartile does not reveal who clicked Skip. They are also not the same 59% who failed to record a TrueView view, because some people watch past 5 seconds and leave before 20 seconds. Treat 38% as drop-off by the skip point, not a skip rate. Use the 5-second quartile as an opening diagnostic and TrueView view rate (TrueView views / impressions) as the paid-view rate.

Creative diagnostic at the skip point

Before rewriting the entire video, inspect the first 5 seconds:

  • Opening frame: is the product or problem visible without sound?
  • First spoken line: does it match the targeting that bought the impression?
  • Early brand cue: can a skipper still name who advertised?

Rewrite the full cut only when drop-off continues after the skip button, or when TrueView view rate and later quartiles stay weak after the open is fixed. Interactive overlays can add a reason to stay on eligible formats. They are not a skip metric.

Rewarded in-app units are a different product: the viewer opts into a full play for a reward. Do not mix that completion with YouTube skippable in-stream.

Which named platforms expose a skip metric

PlatformSkip controlActual skip metric in ads reporting
Google skippable in-streamYes, after 5 secondsNo dedicated skip-rate column. Use quartiles, TrueView view rate, watch time, and completion
Google bumper / non-skippableNoSkip rate does not apply
Meta AdsFeed and Reels can be scrolled past; in-stream products varyVideo ad metrics cover duration, ThruPlay, and milestones, including people who skipped to a point inside the video. That is seeking, not a skip-button rate
Spotify AdsStandard audio is generally non-skippable. Long-form music ads in select markets can be skipped after 30 secondsStudio reporting documents completion and 25/50/75/100% played, not a universal skip-rate KPI

Start from the platform homepages when you need the live UI: Google Ads, Meta Ads, and Spotify Ads. Confirm columns in the campaign you are running.

Our view: Skip rate, when you construct one, matters most at the moment viewers are allowed to leave. Review the opening frame, first spoken line, and early brand cue before rewriting the rest of the video. Lower skipping still does not prove ROI or incrementality.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is ad skipping?

Ad skipping is a viewer using an available skip control. On Google skippable in-stream ads, that control appears after 5 seconds. Quartile drop-off near that point includes other exits and is not a skip-button count. Non-skippable and bumper units have no skip button.

Does Google Ads report an ad skipping rate?

No dedicated skip-rate column is documented. Google Ads reports TrueView views, TrueView view rate, video played-to quartiles, watch time, and completion. Google notes a steep drop-off after 5 seconds on in-stream ads when the skip button appears.

How do you calculate a skip-point drop-off?

For a 20-second skippable in-stream ad, video played to 25% is the 5-second skip point. Skip-point retention is viewers still watching at 25% divided by player starts. Skip-point drop-off is 1 minus that retention rate. It includes every exit before the milestone, not a count of Skip clicks.

Do Meta or Spotify report skip rate for ads?

Meta Ads documents ThruPlay, duration, and milestone metrics, including people who skipped ahead inside a video. It does not document a skip-button rate for ads. Spotify reports completion and quartile play; skippable audio is limited to documented cases such as long-form music ads after 30 seconds in select markets.
